One Girl’s Quest for the Perfect Tomato

March 17, 2015 by Rachel Jenkins

If you’re anything like me, then you get pretty overwhelmed with the tomato section in the grocery store. Seriously, why are there are so many different kinds of tomatoes? Do they all taste the same? What’s the difference? Luckily I have done all of the delicious tomato testing research for you. Here are 4 of my favorite tomatoes, brought to you by SUNSET®.

Kumato™ — Nominated by Men’s Health as the Best Tomato for Men, the hubby enjoys this tomato straight up, with a sprinkle of sea salt.

Angel Sweet™— Can we talk about the perfect sweetness these add to bruschetta?

Y.E.L.O.™ (Youth. Energy. Life. Om.)—I like to use these to add brightness to an otherwise ordinary salad, but they can also be juiced or made into yummy sauces!

Zima—These are snack magic. Put them in a bowl. Walk away. They disappear!

A Delicious History

After discovering my new favorite tomatoes, I dug a little deeper into Sunset and learned about their delicious history, so I have to share:

More than 60 years ago, Grandpa Umberto Mastronardi brought greenhouse growing to North America. With a passion for flavor and consistent quality, he pioneered the commercial greenhouse industry to provide consumers with fresh greenhouse grown vegetables. Today, SUNSET® is known for their world-class tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers.

Greenhouse Grown

Now for the scientific stuff: Did you know that Greenhouse growing is an incredibly sustainable way of farming? It has a 95% reliability rate and yields up to 20 times more than field growing. Not only that, but it leaves a small carbon footprint. It uses minimal to no pesticides, all water is UV treated and recycled, and has maximum CO2 absorption. Pretty cool, huh?

SUNSET® likes to keep things natural even when it comes to pest control. They practice Integrated Pest Management (IPM), which basically means they rely on insects to protect crops from other hungry bugs. They use the latest greenhouse technology, like ergonomically grown plants, but they still value the old fashioned things, like vine-ripened and hand picked fruit, to ensure only the best quality possible reaches your tables.

Bonus! All of their products are from plant hybrids that reproduce without any additives and are all non-GMO verified. For a list of their Non-GMO enrolled products, please visit: www.nongmoproject.org.
