May 2, 2016 by Enjoy Life Foods

Join Enjoy Life Foods in celebrating Celiac Awareness Month and Food Allergy Awareness Week (May 8 –May 14). At Enjoy Life, we believe in celebrating and raising gluten free and food allergy awareness year-round, but May is designated as a spotlight month. While all of Enjoy Life products are certified gluten free, verified non-GMO and free-from the top 8 common allergens, meaning we never use wheat, dairy, egg, soy, peanuts, tree nuts, fish or shellfish as ingredients in our foods, we know that shopping can be a daunting outing for most. We understand the importance of finding safe, allergy-friendly foods, so we pulled together a few tips to to help you navigate the grocery store like a pro. Happy shopping!

1. Head to the Gluten-Free Section

Many stores offer dedicated gluten free sections! Head there first to search for gluten-free and allergy-friendly foods. If a retailer doesn’t have a dedicated section, look for shelf-talkers and other signage noting free-from messaging.

2. Read the nutrition label

Don’t solely rely on “_____—free” messaging. Some products contain allergens hidden under a different name. Print or request a copy of an Enjoy Life Survival Guide. The guide breaks down terms and ingredients indicating the presence of gluten and the top 8 allergens.

3. Consider manufacturing

Although an allergen may not be a direct ingredient, it may be present in the facility where the product was produced. Enjoy Life’s bakery operates under strict regulations and routine rapid tests are performed to ensure our products are free-from gluten and the top 8 allergens.

4. Identify higher risk areas

Exposed foods (think, deli bars and salad bars) are at a higher risk for for cross-contamination. Be cautious when consuming foods from these areas, or try to avoid them altogether.

5. Save money

Many stores offer free in-store coupon booklets to help you save money while shopping for gluten free and allergy-friendly products!

6. Shop online

There are numerous online retailers that sell gluten free and allergy-friendly products all within the click of a button. If grocery stores stress you out, shop from the comfort of your own home.
